This short course is intended to give students a basic introduction into gas compression using a centrifugal compressor. The course will cover the principles of centrifugal compression and a discussion of the various compressor configurations. The various components contained in a centrifugal compressor will be discussed. Components to be addressed will include the compressor case and internal components such as the rotor assembly, labyrinth and shaft seals, and thrust bearings. The course will also address the various auxiliary systems including the surge control, machinery protection and the seal and lubrication systems. Basic compressor operation and performance will be addressed. Maintenance requirements and concerns will also be covered.
