The increasing pressure on transmission companies to be cost competitive has required that non-traditional approaches be investigated to meet market demands. In this case, high speed (900-1200 rpm) equipment has been developed as an alternative to more traditional integral or rotating equipment. This paper presents a new compressor cylinder design specifically for gas transmission applications from concept, through design, manufacture and testing, including an innovative feature that is in the patent process. The design process includes solid modeling, finite element analysis and acoustic analog evaluation. The manufacturing process includes machining, hydrotesting and assembly. The testing process includes overpressure testing with strain gauge results and performance testing in a closed loop facility. The purpose of the paper is to present a design project from concept to completion for a new product aimed at a non-traditional market for high speed natural gas compression equipment.
