This paper will raise awareness about several torsional vibration problems that can occur in reciprocating equipment and gives guidelines based on experience with actual systems to avoid these problems. Several failures that were linked to torsional vibration are presented. For each case, the type of equipment is described, the problem and cause are identified, and the solution implemented is given. A summary of the lessons learned from each case history and a list of recommendations to improve reliability (during both the design stage and after the system is in service) is provided. In general, the solutions were based on practical considerations that could be retrofitted in the field. Of particular interest is that some of the failures discussed could not have been predicted using the “theoretical” assumptions typically used in a torsional analysis. Based on the results of these investigations, a more comprehensive torsional analysis is often required in the design stage. In addition, torsional vibration measurements are important to verify acceptability during commissioning.
