Application of Gas Engine Modeling for Improved In-Cylinder Mixing (Research)
In order to determine the important factors to consider in the design of a new natural gas fuel injector for large-bore engines, a computer model was developed. The zero-dimensional model details the thermodynamic properties inside the cylinder, while the axis-symmetric and 3-dimensional model yield detailed information on the air and fuel flow in the cylinder. The model utilizes the latest KIVA-3 combustion code to give information on the products of combustion. This information has been used to design the LCM Mixing Injector, and test results that show the effectiveness of the injector will be presented. Other important benefits of applying the model to existing engines to pinpoint needed improvements will also be discussed.
