Improved Criteria for Assessing Crankshaft Misalignment (Research)
Research conducted by Southwest Research Institute under the GMRC research program has led to new insights into the behavior of crankshafts under the combined effects of misalignment and operational loading. The research has shown that the traditional Caldwell criterion for web deflections, widely used to assess the severity of crankshaft misalignment, is a poor predictor of the crankshaft stresses that can lead to failure. A new and improved criterion is proposed that uses web deflections in conjunction with crankshaft geometric variables. The new criterion provides a much-improved prediction of crankshaft stresses and expected crankshaft fatigue life, leading to improved crankshaft reliability.
