This paper explores how an integrated diagnostic and automation system can be deployed to optimize reciprocating assets. We propose that integrating engine/compressor diagnostic capabilities with the automation system delivers better machine protection and control through real-time data inferencing. Traditional automation systems are limited because they offer no means of evaluating actual unit condition and, therefore, tend to affect cautious control based on theoretically derived values. Opportunities for optimizing assets based on real-time data acquisition and inferencing are analyzed. Studies focus on how multiple-variable control benefits asset protection. In addition, we demonstrate how incorporating diagnostic tools can provide protection for valves, rings, and other components from certain failure modes and contribute to condition-based decisions. We confirm that an automation system with integrated diagnostic capabilities will expand the operating envelope while offering better protection, control and condition monitoring of engine and compressor assets.
