El Paso Natural Gas Company has been automating compressor equipment since 1984; consequently, several types of systems have been installed over the years. At the present time, El Paso has Honeywell, Trisen, Reliance, Speedtronic, and Fanuc based systems, with different levels of automation. El Paso has launched a program to replace the various systems with Allen Bradley Hardware and Company developed software at all facilities. Each site should have the same look and feel to allow a technician to go from site to site with confidence. The replacement program started in 1999 with projects being budgeted in three separate divisions and sixteen different operating districts. There was a valid concern that the company would end up with sixteen unique systems. This paper will cover in detail the following activities: challenges were consistency, technical support, leadership, and maintaining schedule. Implementation consisted of planning, design, fabrication, and construction. Unforeseen issues were lack of documentation and personalities.
