GAS Products has developed a pneumatic variable clearance system for smooth, stepless loading and unloading of clearance pockets. This system works with fixed cavity pockets, as well as manually variable pockets. It allows the load and capacity of reciprocating compressors to be adjusted to precisely what is needed to achieve optimum fuel consumption, capacity, horsepower, exhaust emissions, or any other parameter that can be monitored and used as a control variable. It is believed that the load could be maintained within 1% of the desired set point. Current systems are typically designed to achieve a load step that is 5% or greater. As the operating conditions change and the load approaches 100%, the only viable option is to unload to 95% or so, with the consequent loss in capacity, and the deterioration of fuel consumption and emissions. Clearance unloaders have different effects at different pressure ratios. At some conditions a load step may result in little or no load change, while at other operating conditions the same load step may result in a 7% load change. The new pneumatic variable system provides stepless unloading which allows the load to be kept right on the desired point at any operating condition within the design range of the compressor. This paper demonstrates the method as well as provides field test data to document the performance of the new system.
