This paper will demonstrate how pocket arrangement can affect compressor pulsation. Field data will be presented to document this phenomenon. The field data collected will be used to validate a computer model which can predict optimum pocket combinations for a given load step. The computer model is able to optimize the pocket unloading arrangement by exploiting phasing relationships between compressor cylinders and minimizing header gas velocity fluctuations. By changing the unloading schedule to address pulsation, other engine parameters are positively affected and these will be discussed. Lastly, general loading recommendations will be made for the most common engine/compressor combinations to minimize pulsation effects.
