Friction and Deflection Characteristics of Epoxy Material for Reciprocating Compressor Foundations
This paper addresses characteristics of materials used for chock mounts and grout in the foundations of large reciprocating compressors. Such compressors are widely used in gas transmission, oil and gas production, gas storage, refining, and petrochemical industries. Installation integrity depends on effective mounting of the compressor, recognition of the substantial dynamic loads to be transmitted across the mounts in friction, and anchor bolt forces high enough to ensure frictional holding capacity. The need exists to engineer reciprocating compressor mounts: by calculating required friction forces, by calculating the necessary loads normal to the mount, and by assessing the deflection of chocks and grout as a function of temperature and time under these loads. This requires knowledge of loads, friction and deflection characteristics of the materials involved, and methods to calculate geometry specific values for deflection as a function of time under load, including viscoelastic behavior (creep). This paper presents viscoelastic load deflection characteristics, and friction data for materials representative of those widely used in reciprocating compression foundations. It further provides working methods for engineering compressor mounts using these characteristics.
