In 1995, PRCI funded work at the Colorado State University's Large Bore Engine Testbed to determine the impact of injecting fuel at pressures in excess of 300 psig. This new technology proved to significantly reduce criteria pollutants (NOx and CO) and fuel consumption through control/enhancement of In-cylinder mixing. Although a promising alternative for reducing criteria pollutants, high-pressure fuel injection was never extended to a field application. In 1998, Enginuity, in cooperation with Woodward Governor and Williams-Transco, formulated a pilot program to install High Pressure Fuel Injection (HPFI™) on a Clark TCV-16. Gas Research Institute (GRI) provided additional funding to document the impact of HMPFI on emission rates through the use of an FTIR analyzer. The pilot program encompasses the installation of an HPFI system followed by documentation of the potential of this technology of meeting the proposed HAPs/MACT emissions reduction targets. This paper will detail the findings of the High-Pressure Fuel Injection pilot program on the Clark TCV-16 at Williams-Transco. The benefits of HPFI™ will be quantified through a comparison to baseline test performed on the TCV-16 in its “stock” configuration (OEM style valves). Topics covered will include the impact of HPFI™ on criteria pollutants, fuel consumption and the impact on overall engine performance/operatbility.
