Optimizing the Application of Medium Speed Reciprocating Compressors in Gas Transmission Service
Since the late forties, the low speed integral engines continue to be the workhorse of the gas transmission industry in North America. As time passed, the installed cost of integral engines increased substantially as unit horsepowers were scaled up. In contrast, the installed cost per hp for gas turbines increased only modestly. Due to lower installed cost and higher perceived reliability, the gas turbines continue to be installed in this service. Also, the high speed separable reciprocating compressors have been successfully used in the production and gas lift applications in the oil patch. Their usage in the gas transmission service has been increasing over the past five years. They are ideally suited for lateral service and can be driven by motors for locations where emission requirements are severe. This paper will present the application of these compressors in a lateral/mainline transmission service. The speed of the compressors was reduced to 720 RPM to further improve efficiency and reliability. The compressors were direct driven by a 10 pole induction motor. The units have been manufactured, tested and installed in the field. They have been in service since 10/98. The units operate without any significant problems since the start up. Recent brief testing confirmed the predicted performance. The mechanical and acoustic vibration levels are low and acceptable.
