One of the most difficult tasks to accomplish during the engine upgrade process is accurately matching the new turbocharger to the engine. Oftentimes, this task is not accomplished in a reliable, robust manner. The typical scenario is that at first the engine system may not operate at all. After making various field modifications, the engine is finally brought online at a less than optimum configuration. This paper presents a strategy that optimally configures the air flow path in the engine/turbocharger system. The strategy looks at each component in the air flow path, including the turbocharger, engine ports/valves, intercooler, and intake and exhaust subsystems. By using an optimizing strategy, the end results are the highest compressor and turbine efficiencies that in turn translate into the lowest specific fuel consumption.
