Whenever electrical power is available close to a gas compressor station, and at economical rates and conditions, the use of electric motor drivers should be evaluated to get the most favorable total cost of ownership for the project. With the widespread use of high speed supersynchronous motors to drive centrifugal compressors directly, i.e., without step-up gears, and employment of active magnetic bearings, the completely dry rotating string became reality. The paper focuses on a natural gas project in The Netherlands where such a compressor string operates successfully since the Fall of 1998 and a total of 500 MW of such units will be installed over the next 15 years.
