In 1995, a major U.S. pipeline company initiated a modernization project for four of its critical compressor stations that had been commissioned in the 1960s. The modernization included improved emissions (“clean burn”) as well as upgrades which increased the speed and therefore compressor capacity at certain locations. The effects of the speed increase are the major focus of this paper. Such changes have major ramifications on the operation of the system from a dynamic standpoint (pulsation, vibration, and performance). This paper discusses the substantial engineering effort undertaken by the pipeline company to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation.
