This paper presents important consideration in the design of mounting systems and foundations for reciprocating compressors based on recent PCRC investigations. It characterizes the gas and inertia forces generated within individual cylinders; it addresses the transmission of these forces through the compressor frame to the frame mounting system, and thereby to the concrete block. It shows how compressor frame flexibility influences the forces the block and mounting systems must carry. It presents methodology for designing the mounting system and anchor bolt tension to carry these transmitted forces, and how anchor bolt length and termination can influence future integrity. The paper presents the results of analyzing the concrete block and compressor frame, using three-dimensional finite element analysis.
