This paper discusses the application of high speed reciprocating compressors to a service with a wide variation in pressure ratio, together with a need for automatic startup and torque control. These conditions made normal variable clearance pockets unfeasible. By applying a system which controls the compressor suction valve closing event, computer torque control was possible across the operating range. An explanation of the physical operation of the equipment is made, with its benefits, liabilities and range of control. From this, a control system is described which has been shown to load the engines within 3 percent or rated horsepower. A discussion of startup problems and possible improvements show the level of user expertise needed for successful application. This system has been highly reliable and is potentially useful to many operators of similar units.
