Extensive R&D has been done by varioys gas engine manufacturers to improve the combustion process for better efficiency and lower emissions. Advanced, computerized engine management with improved mechanical design in modern large horsepower lean burn engines allows very precise combustion conditions. Variable fuel and site conditions lost their influence in operation parameters. Also, the horsepower range available has grown remarkably, being today in the range of 8000hp. The other target of the thermal and mechanical design is to improve the thermal efficiency of the combustion while decreasing emissions. Modern reciprocating gas engines can reach better than 42% thermal efficiency while keeping NOx levels below 0.5 g/bhp-hr over whole operation speed. Sophisticated combined engine and compressor control systems allow remotely controlled pipeline stations with very advanced troubleshooting and predictive maintenance features. Combining a high efficiency engine with the same size of modern reciprocating compressor designed for a pipeline transmission, is a very attractive alternative both technically and commercially for the replacement market or even for new pipeline compressor stations.
