Effect of Ignition Failures on Combustion Efficiency and Engine Emissions
With today's emphasis on enhanced efficiency and reduced emissions, operators are driven to improve engine monitoring techniques. Many of these techniques are used for automation purposes and as an alternative to continuous exhaust emissions monitoring. The ignition system is known to be a major cause of engine performance degradation. This is primarily due to the extreme environment in which it operates. It is also one of the most difficult engine subsystems to test and verify. This paper documents several examples of secondary ignition performance degradation that affect combustion efficiency and exhaust emissions output. The paper also presents information that can help operators and technicians in identifying some of the more difficult ignition concerns without detailed performance analysis testing.
