Development of a Rod Load Monitor for Continuous Compressor Horsepower Determination & Diagnostic Analysis
Southwest Research Institute, in cooperation with GMRC, has developed an instrument for the continuous determination of reciprocating compressor horsepower through compressor rod load measurement. The device has been designed to operate continuously through a self-powered scheme or battery powered for short-term diagnostic work. This paper presents an overview of the development of the technology. Data acquired from device prototypes will be presented that compare rod loads and HP levels determined using the new technology and using cylinder pressure based calculations. Data acquired from field tests of the technology on both slow speed and high speed units will be presented. A unique feature of the technology is the ability to acquire embedded RTD data. Data from recent testing to document crosshead pin temperatures on a modern high speed unit will be presented.
