Urban residential installations of gas pipeline compression equipment provide several distinct challenges. Williams Gas Pipeline (WGP) is currently involved in an Air Emissions Reduction Program. This provided impetus for a unit replacement project at Station 35 in Houston. The previous five years of operation established the existing 4-cycle Nordberg Gas Engines as units with very low yearly run time. Close proximity to a high-voltage electric transmission line as well as prior experience with electric motor units in emissions and noise sensitive areas drove the selection for new equipment to electric motor drive. The local power company required WGP to build and operate the substation for the motor feed. WGPP has significant experience with successful application of Variable Frequency Drives (VFD). A Mechanical Variable Speed Drive (MVCD) had long been considered as a viable option for some future application, and it was chosen to apply At Station 35 for speed adjustment with a fixed speed induction motor. MVMSD technology was new to WGP, but industry experience had established it as worthy of consideration by WGP, especially for an application perceived at that stage of design as having little run time. WGP's operating experience with sound attenuation capabilities within a compressor body at a sister compressor station was a major factor in choosing the compressor design. Nine months of operation of these two parallel Fixed Speed Induction Motor/Mechanical Variable Speed Drive/Centrifugal Pipeline Compressor systems have proven them reliable and environmentally compatible in this NOx emission and noise sensitive area. Contrary to previous history at Station 35, these units have proven critically important to WGP gas demands and have been operated as baseline units with very high, almost continuous run times.
