This case study examines a high speed, separable, field gathering compressor that experienced a crankshaft thrust plate failure within 4000 hrs of commissioning. The study will demonstrate how dynamic geometrical changes of the coupling caused a loss of compressor crankshaft axial end float clearance and consequent compressor thrust plate failure. A second component of the study explores the effect the coupling forces had on the electric motors capacity to operate at its magnetic center. The failure led to the development of a special alignment procedure designed to avoid reoccurrences.
