The Impact of Independent Engine Bank Control for a Large Bore Natural Gas Engine
In this work, two methods of optimization through fuel and ignition control are explored on a Cooper Bessemer GMV-4TF two-stroke cycle large bore natural gas engine. The first method optimizes brake specific fuel consumption without increasing baseline NOx levels. Bank-to-bank fuel biasing is adjusted in an attempt in advance ignition timing while still providing adequate protection from pre-ignition and detonation damage. The second method reduces emissions of NOx without cost to fuel consumption from the baseline conditions. Again, fuel biasing and ignition timing are altered both globally and bank-to-bank in order to attain the desired condition. Bank-to-bank fuel biasing shows an improvement in the reduction of NOx emissions. Thee even, or compressor side, bank shows significant reductions in NOx. The knock limit is also advanced allowing for advanced ignition timing that results in increased fuel efficiency and reductions in emissions of CO CH2O and THC. The knock-limit improvements allow the BMEP of the engine to be increased at nominal brake specific fuel consumption.
