This short course will review the various technologies that are available for controlling NOx and CO emissions from a gas turbine. After a brief overview of combustion fundamentals, a series of technologies from simple to novel will be examined in an unbiased manner to show under what circumstances each one makes sense. Descriptions of the various methods will be provided including the capital costs and typical impact on power output and heat rate. Topics covered will include: 1) Combustion Fundamentals (What causes NOx and CO? Diffusion vs. Pre-Mixed Flames; Impact of Fuel Composition); 2) On-Engine Control Technologies (Water Injection; Steam Injection; “Dry Low NOx” Combustors; Catalytic Combustors); 3) Off-Engine Control Technologies (Inlet Fogging; Selective Catalytic Reduction [SCR]; SCONOx).
