Laser-Spark Ignition for Natural Gas Fueled Reciprocating Engines (DOE Research Review) 2003
As the demand for high engine efficiencies and lower emissions drive reciprocating engine combustion to leaner air/fuel operating conditions and higher in-cylinder pressures, increased spark energy is required to maintain stable combustion and low emissions. Unfortunately, increased spark energy negatively impacts spark plug durability and its effectiveness in transmitting adequate energy as an ignition source. Laser ignition offers the potential to improve ignition system durability and improve engine performance. In laser spark ignition, the laser can be positioned at a considerable distance from the point of ignition thus eliminating distortions due to wall effects and problems involving heat loss common in spark plugs. Large rates of energy input can be focused to a point to create sparks. Such laser-induced sparks can create instantaneous temperatures and pressures approaching 105K and 103 atm, respectively, with a sudden release of large quantities of reactive and excited chemical species. These extreme local conditions relative to the surrounding gas give rise to rapid, supersonic expansion and dissipation of energy leading to ignition even under conditions that would be unignitable for a typical spark ignition system. NETL is currently working to compare a laser spark ignition system with a conventional spark ignition in a single cylinder natural gas fueled engine as well as bench scale studies into some fundamental issues surrounding the laser spark phenomena. In conjunction with studies of the ignition and combustion in engines using laser spark, NETL is developing a prototype low-cost laser spark ignition system. NETL is working with the Natural Gas Infrastructure Reliability program and DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency, Advanced Reciprocating Engine Systems (ARES) program with the goal of developing a laser based ignition system. NETL goals include determination of the operations (lean limit) and emissions performance for single po9int laser ignition in
