Category Title
A constant volume combustion test chamber (CTC) has been built to study the penetration and ignition delay of a single micro-pilot injection event. The CTC is capable of operating at temperatures up to 745K and pressures in excess of 7 MPa. Injections into both air and inert gases are possible. The CTC is fitted with a common rail fuel injection system manufactured by Delphi Diesel Systems France, utilizing custom control software allowing injections as small as 1mm3. Spray penetration and shape images are acquired using a MIE scattering technique utilizing a Nd: YAG laser and a high resolution CCD camera. These sequential images are post-processed using IMAQ Vision. Ignition delay is captured using a sensitive Oriel photo-multiplier tube and an amplification system. Penetration and delay results are compared to existing models and are correlated with differences in performance from on-engine testing. Ignition delays of 4.1 ms have been observed at internal CTC conditions of 738K and 415 PSI, with a rail pressure of 7000 PSI delivering 8mL of fuel.
