The temperature of the piston rod in a reciprocating compressor has a direct impact on the life of the packing. All other things being equal, the lower the temperature, the longer the packing life. A large number of factors contribute to or moderate the piston rod temperature. Among these are gas temperature, gas pressure, gas leakage, surface speed of the piston rod, rod material and surface finish, seal ring material, type and quantity of lubricant, if any, cleanliness of the gas, impact of the gas on the lubricant, use of water-cooled cylinders, cooling of the packing case, heat extraction from the piston rod in the packing case, and rod ring design. This paper begins by discussing methods of measuring the piston rod temperature and their effectiveness. Three methods commonly used are infrared (IR), thermocouples (TCs), and radio-frequency (RF) transmitters. Each of these methods, as well as its effectiveness, is discussed. This paper then focuses on methods of effectively minimizing the piston rod temperature through the use of heat extraction from the piston rod and through the use of properly designed rod rings. Heat extraction from the piston rod in the packing case can be accomplished through the use of oil cooling and through the use of heat-conducting backup rings. Using the oil-cooling method, cooling oil is pumped into the packing case into a chamber where it is circulated around the piston rod. Data are presented which will show the cooling effectiveness, as well as the other side benefits associated with this method. Hear conduction to the packing case can be accomplished by the use of heat-conducting backup rings. Data re presented which show the drop in rod temperature due to heat conduction from the rod directly to the packing case. Several new types of rod rings have been designed which minimize the frictional heat generated between the sealing rings and the piston rod.
