Turbocharger Degradation Measurement Using Embedded Sensor
The pressure ratio versus air flow rate curve of a turbocharger in certain portions of the performance map is relatively flat. This results in a substantial change in air flow rate through compressor for a very small change in the pressure ratio across the compressor. In order to determine and trend compressor degradation, it is important to measure the air flow through the turbocharger compressor during runtime. By coupling this measurement with the inlet and exit pressure, a very clear picture of turbocharger compressor performance can be determined. Air flow rate can be calculated empirically by measuring the total and static pressure and the total temperature at the compressor inlet or by using emissions data. But none of thee methods can really be used to determine compressor air flow rate in real time. This paper describes a suitable flow measurement technique that consists of an embedded sensor within the turbocharger. The sensor is robust and reliable and demonstrates repeatable results within acceptable accuracy. The novel technique of flow measurement uses a fiber optic sensor. A miniature fiber optic probe is manufactured from a fused tape coupler by a special fabrication technique. This coupler along with a relatively in expensive last light source and optical detector is used to generate an electrical signal that varies with the bending magnitude of the probe. The bending movement of the probe responds to the air velocity flowing past the probe. The data from flow measuring sensor are used to determine the air flow rate through the turbocharger compressor at any operating condition. Hence, this data will help evaluate scavenging efficiency, scavenging ratio and turbocharger degradation on a continuous basis.
