Increased operating flexibility has been identified as an important feature for natural gas pipeline engines. In order to increase engine operating flexibility and still maintain high operating efficiencies coupled with constrained pollutant emissions, the turbocharger needs to be able to operate at high efficiency and air flow over a large operating range. Unfortunately, the conventional turbocharger for supplying that air depends on the engine speed so that a large torque is available only in a narrow portion of the speed range. In order to increase the boost pressure at off-design conditions, the engine operator must replace the existing turbocharger with one that is designed to match the engine requirements at the off-design conditions. However, the engine will not operate properly at the design point unless the original turbocharger is re-installed on the engine. This paper presents design and prototyping of a variable geometry turbocharger and the study of the flow field through diffuser and turbine under a variety of diffuser and nozzle ring approach angles. The paper also discusses the performance characteristics of the variable geometry turbocharger and how these performance characteristics can be used to optimize engine performance.
