The upgrade of a 30+ year-old control system from mechanical to electronic control, and development work needed to maintain the control range of the original system are detailed. A compressor station equipped with Ingersoll-Rand engines is used for high ratio storage injection and low ratio withdrawal and transmission service. The original valve actuation unloading system (Infinite Step control) has become worn and unreliable. The compressor configuration and extreme pressure range prevented common methods of load control, such as clearance pockets and cylinder deactivation. After considering possible methods of load control, a decision was made to convert from the original hydraulic-mechanical method of valve actuation. In working with the manufacturer, a new electronic control approach was developed, utilizing most of the original compressor valve hardware while eliminating the worn and complicated controls. This provides new generation technology and access to the control parameters, while maintaining the proven hardware reliability.
