Ignition systems on natural gas engines have become more advanced over the past thirty years. The ignition system has evolved from maintenance-intensive magnetos to internally time capacitor discharge systems to the current crank referenced digital electronic systems. Despite these rapid advancements, all ignition systems (old and new) are made up of six fundamental components: 1) the power source, 2) the pulse/timing device, 3) the distributor, 4) the coil or transformer, 5) the spark plug, and 6) the ground. This short course will teach the fundamentals of ignition systems. The class will describe and explain the construction, operation, technological advances, and key troubleshooting skills associated with each of the six sub-systems. Upon completion of the course, each student will be better equipped to understand and effectively troubleshoot ignition systems.
